Violence and Storms in Chad
Earlier this summer, conflict erupted between Muslim nomads and Christian farmers in southern Chad when a herd of un-attended cattle was allowed into a field of millet. What started as an argument between the farmer and the herder drew into a violent conflict affecting several villages. Government military intervened to establish order but not before 11 people were killed, houses were burned, crops were destroyed, and livestock were killed. LBIM sent famine relief money which will be managed by our sister LB Church in Chad to purchase and distribute grain, tarps, blankets, and mosquito nets to the families affected.
Last month, a violent rain storm accompanied by high winds swept through the village of Doh-Dewela, Chad. Multiple houses were damaged in this village of subsistence farmers of the Fulbe people group. Chadian partners of Lutheran Brethren International Mission acted quickly, made a visit to assess damage, and reported the urgent needs. Using reserves in the LBIM famine relief fund, food, tarps, blankets, and mosquito nets were purchased and sent quickly. Community elders worked with LBIM partners to equitably distribute supplies to the needy families in the community. The love of Christ was shared and the gospel was proclaimed. LBIM Director Dan Venberg wrote, “I am so grateful to our Chadian missionary partners who make this ministry happen. I’m also grateful for LBIM’s ministry coordinator Danny Bronson who oversees ministry like this. And I am grateful to the churches and donors of the CLB that generously give to the mission and ministries of LBIM. Thank you!”
