Artist Story: Sam Widholm

My love for worship and songwriting began the moment I was saved by Jesus. That evening, God used the song “O Come to the Altar” by Elevation Worship to change my life. The words and meaning of the song struck my heart and led me to surrender my life to him. That moment ignited a passion in me to write songs that worship and glorify God.

I began to pay closer attention to the lyrics of worship songs. These weren’t just words set to music―they were powerful, Gospel-centered truths. I found myself writing down thoughts, reflections, and phrases from sermons. Over time, those scattered thoughts began to form into songs.

As I’ve grown in my faith, I’ve come to see how art is a powerful way to express our relationship with God and give him the glory he deserves. Whether through music, painting, writing, or any other form of creativity, art allows us to connect with God and share our deepest emotions. For me, that connection comes alive through songwriting and worship.

I am currently at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, pursuing an Associate’s degree in Marketing. This fall, I’m excited to transfer to the University of Northwestern―St. Paul, to study Youth Ministry.

My family and I have been part of Bethesda Lutheran Brethren Church in Eau Claire, Wisconsin for many years. This year, I’m honored to serve as a worship and student ministry intern under the guidance of Eric Johnson and Aaron Spina. It’s been a fulfilling experience to serve the church family that has nurtured my faith. Additionally, serving as a cabin leader at Inspiration Point Bible Camp has been life-changing, allowing me to share the gospel with youth and families―something I deeply cherish. I want to create a space where students feel loved, accepted, and encouraged to grow in their relationship with Jesus.

Throughout my journey in ministry, songwriting, and my personal faith, I’ve been blessed by countless people who have mentored, guided, and loved me. I’m especially thankful for the body of believers at Bethesda, along with family and friends, who have encouraged me, helped me discern my calling in ministry, and walked alongside me.

Aaron Spina, the director of worship arts at Bethesda and my best friend, has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. His unwavering support and mentorship have played a significant role in shaping me into the man I am today. Not only did Aaron take me under his wing, but our shared passion for worship and songwriting has created a bond that is truly special.

Like me, Aaron has a gift for songwriting. We have written songs together that God has used to not only serve our church but to also strengthen our own faith. Through countless hours of writing, praying, and laughing together, Aaron has challenged and inspired me, helping me grow in both my musical and songwriting abilities. His friendship has been a constant source of encouragement.

1 Corinthians 12:7 speaks about spiritual gifts. Creativity is one of those gifts. Through songwriting, I can express my love for God and use that gift to serve the church, drawing both myself and others closer to him in worship. Just as God used a song to draw me closer to him, I hope my music can do the same for someone going through a tough season, or a time of questioning their faith.

Most of the time, when I sit down with the intention to write, nothing really comes. It’s in the unexpected moments―during prayer, in worship, or while reflecting on what God is doing in my life―that the Holy Spirit moves. That’s when the words flow. Often, my songs come directly from my conversations with God. The Holy Spirit is the best songwriter. When I lean into his presence, that’s when the music comes to life.

I believe that creativity is a gift from God, meant to glorify him and encourage others. My main goal in songwriting is to create biblically accurate, Spirit-filled songs that sound good, serve the body of Christ, and encourage others in their faith walk. Pray that God continues to use my songs as a source of comfort, hope, and truth for those who hear them, just as he has used music to draw me closer to him.
